Daylighting & Natural Lighting

December 2, 2008

One of the most energy efficient and cost effective ways to save money with your home or business is the use of natural lighting instead of electricity. There are many ways to incorporate daylighting into your green project. Certainly, we think adding window film is a great way to use the sun’s light while repelling harmful UV rays, as well as unwanted heat and solar gain.

Here are some tips the U.S. Department of Energy’s division of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) suggests:

The best way to incorporate daylighting in your home depends on your climate and home’s design. The sizes and locations of windows should be based on the cardinal directions rather than their effect on the street-side appearance of the house.

South-facing windows are most advantageous for daylighting and for moderating seasonal temperatures. They allow most winter sunlight into the home but little direct sun during the summer, especially when properly shaded.

North-facing windows are also advantageous for daylighting. They admit relatively even, natural light, producing little glare and almost no unwanted summer heat gain.

Although east- and west-facing windows provide good daylight penetration in the morning and evening, respectively, they should be limited. They may cause glare, admit a lot of heat during the summer when it is usually not wanted, and contribute little to solar heating during the winter.

Speak with a Feng Shui Tints Representative today about how to best fit your home to take advantage of natural light and daylighting.

Harmful Health Effects of Sunlight, Sun Rays & UV Radiation

November 21, 2008

We at Feng Shui tints understand the deep and important role the sun plays in our existence and the presence of all living things. However, as important as it is, the sun (or uv sunlight) remains the primary contributor to skin disorders and diseases, such as skin cancer and melanoma.

A quality window film can block nearly 99% of all harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Please consider the health benefits to protect your family and loved ones.

Here is what the SunWise Program of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says:

Health Effects of Overexposure to the Sun

Since the appearance of an ozone hole over the Antarctic in the early 1980s, Americans have become aware of the health threats posed by ozone depletion, which decreases our atmosphere’s natural protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. This fact sheet provides a quick overview of the major health problems linked to overexposure to UV radiation:

Understanding these risks and taking a few sensible precautions will help you to enjoy the sun while lowering your chances of sun-related health problems later in life.

Skin Cancer

The incidence of skin cancer in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and one American dies every hour from this devastating disease. Medical research is helping us understand the causes and effects of skin cancer. Many health and education groups are working to reduce the incidence of this disease, of which 1.3 million cases have been predicted for 2000 alone, according to The American Cancer Society.

Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, is also one of the fastest growing types of cancer in the United States. Many dermatologists believe there may be a link between childhood sunburns and melanoma later in life. Melanoma cases in this country have more than doubled in the past 2 decades, and the rise is expected to continue.

Nonmelanoma Skin Cancers

Nonmelanoma skin cancers are less deadly than melanomas. Nevertheless, left untreated, they can spread, causing disfigurement and more serious health problems. More than 1.2 million Americans will develop nonmelanoma skin cancer in 2000 while more than 1,900 will die from the disease. There are two primary types of nonmelanoma skin cancers. These two cancers have a cure rate as high as 95 percent if detected and treated early. The key is to watch for signs and seek medical treatment.

Basal Cell Carcinomas are the most common type of skin cancer tumors. They usually appear as small, fleshy bumps or nodules on the head and neck, but can occur on other skin areas. Basal cell carcinoma grows slowly, and rarely spreads to other parts of the body. It can, however, penetrate to the bone and cause considerable damage.

Squamous Cell Carcinomas are tumors that may appear as nodules or as red, scaly patches. This cancer can develop into large masses, and unlike basal cell carcinoma, it can spread to other parts of the body.

Other Skin Damage

Other UV-related skin disorders include actinic keratoses and premature aging of the skin. Actinic keratoses are skin growths that occur on body areas exposed to the sun. The face, hands, forearms, and the “V” of the neck are especially susceptible to this type of lesion. Although premalignant, actinic keratoses are a risk factor for squamous cell carcinoma. Look for raised, reddish, rough-textured growths and seek prompt medical attention if you discover them. Chronic exposure to the sun also causes premature aging, which over time can make the skin become thick, wrinkled, and leathery. Since it occurs gradually, often manifesting itself many years after the majority of a person’s sun exposure, premature aging is often regarded as an unavoidable, normal part of growing older. With proper protection from UV radiation, however, most premature aging of the skin can be avoided.

Cataracts and Other Eye Damage

Cataracts are a form of eye damage in which a loss of transparency in the lens of the eye clouds vision. If left untreated, cataracts can lead to blindness. Research has shown that UV radiation increases the likelihood of certain cataracts. Although curable with modern eye surgery, cataracts diminish the eyesight of millions of Americans and cost billions of dollars in medical care each year. Other kinds of eye damage include pterygium (i.e., tissue growth that can block vision), skin cancer around the eyes, and degeneration of the macula (i.e., the part of the retina where visual perception is most acute). All of these problems can be lessened with proper eye protection from UV radiation.

Immune Suppression

Scientists have found that overexposure to UV radiation may suppress proper functioning of the body’s immune system and the skin’s natural defenses. All people, regardless of skin color, might be vulnerable to effects including impaired response to immunizations, increased sensitivity to sunlight, and reactions to certain medications.

Blackout & Whiteout Window Films

November 18, 2008

Maybe you have a nice new home theater, or, a classic photography darkroom. Or, maybe you just want more privacy. We can dark it out!

Maybe you own a shop and want to block visibility in sensitive spaces, but still want a lively and fresh look. Great! We’ll add a White Matte (Frost) Film to brighten up the decor.

White Frost Matte Window Film

Blackout = 0% Light Transmission
Whiteout = 7% Light Transmission

Blackout films should not be applied to double pane (thermal insulated windows) which are exposed to sunlight. This may cause overheating and rupture of the seals.
Whiteout films may be used on all types of glazing.

And if you’d still like a little something different. Try one of these great films:

  • White Matte
  • Bronze Matte
  • Grey Matte
  • Silver Matte

5 Great Reasons To Add Window Film To Your Home!

October 11, 2008

If you think the only ones adding window film to their homes are the guys, think again! The sophisticated ladies at Womens-Interest.com have proved once again that the female gender has an understanding of comfort and balance that can rarely be matched. Here are their comments on protecting Womens’ most important assets - their family and the homes they live in.

Deciding if you really need home window tinting is as necessary as deciding if you need to secure yourself even while you are home. Did you know that a window tint secures you and your home’s interior health? Especially now, modern homes have larger and more windows around the house to create a sense of spaciousness, beauty, and chic style.

First, window tinting covers the home interiors from the damaging rays of the sun. Since it could not enter your home, it secures your fabrics, wood, artworks, carpets, and other fixtures from damaging over time.

Second, window tinting provides a cooler ambiance to your home and minimizes the glare due to sunrays. It reduces the enormous amount of heat to enter your home; and it cuts the detrimental UV sunrays.

Third, despite the tint, you can still manage to have the benefit of seeing the beautiful vistas around you; plus, the fact that having window tint is a beautiful home detail improvement.

Fourth, even with window tinting, you can still enjoy a natural lighting all throughout your home. Since you are not closing down blades, slight sun will still pass through your home but without the UV rays anymore.

Fifth, which many think as the best possible reason to make use of tinting, is because of the acquired privacy that it bestows on homeowners. Of course, several people do not want to keep their window shades pulled down all the time because it hampers them from seeing the panoramic view. With window tint, you can pick a tint with superior reflective rate to give the utmost privacy you want for your homes.

Energy Saving Options For Your Business With Quick Payback

October 8, 2008

Here are some great tips by the folks at Go-Green.com to help your business protect the environment as well as saving a few bucks. We think adding a reflective window film is a great start!

Exact payback time depends on energy costs and other factors. For example, payback time for heating and cooling systems depend on local climate. However, payback time for the following energy-saving actions are approximately 1-3 years.

Occupancy sensors are more reliable than expecting employees to turn off lights. Sensors in restrooms and closets save up to 60% of energy used with a manual switch. Timers or photo-sensors help employees to use more daylight. Photo-sensors also adjust for natural light with dimming.

Delamping, (taking out bulbs that are not needed), saves more energy and money in the long term than replacing fixtures. Many older office buildings have too many lights due to outdated codes and the new trend of widespread computer use. Excess lighting glares on computer screens and wastes energy. Payback time for removing two to eight-foot fluorescent lamps, lamp holders, and ballasts is less than a year.

Install CFL pendants and wall sconces for hallway and corridors. These areas don’t need as much lighting as a computer workspace to be safe and attractive.

LIGHTING: Quick Facts

  • Compact fluorescents are 75% more efficient than incandescent and last ten times longer
  • T-8 fluorescents are more efficient than T-12s,
  • Super T8s are more efficient than standard T8s
  • T-5 fluorescents (used in Europe) are more efficient than T-8s
  • Electronic ballasts (for fluorescent and HID lamps) are more efficient than magnetic ballasts
  • Electronic ballasts don’t contain toxic PCB’s
  • Occupancy sensors save up to 60% of energy used with a manual switch
  • LEDs used in an exit sign can save $50 per year

Change to LED exit signs. Save $50 per year by changing exit sign lights to LEDs (light emitting diode). LEDs also last longer than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs (50,000 – 100,000 hrs).

Space Heating and Cooling
HVAC systems tend to be oversized and inefficient. A Package Terminal Air Conditioner (PTAC) heats and cools smalls spaces efficiently. Payback time depends on local factors like climate, but a PTAC pays for itself in approximately three years. Consider other investments like reflective window film or variable speed drive systems for HVAC fans that control speed for energy savings.
