Daylighting & Natural Lighting

December 2, 2008

One of the most energy efficient and cost effective ways to save money with your home or business is the use of natural lighting instead of electricity. There are many ways to incorporate daylighting into your green project. Certainly, we think adding window film is a great way to use the sun’s light while repelling harmful UV rays, as well as unwanted heat and solar gain.

Here are some tips the U.S. Department of Energy’s division of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) suggests:

The best way to incorporate daylighting in your home depends on your climate and home’s design. The sizes and locations of windows should be based on the cardinal directions rather than their effect on the street-side appearance of the house.

South-facing windows are most advantageous for daylighting and for moderating seasonal temperatures. They allow most winter sunlight into the home but little direct sun during the summer, especially when properly shaded.

North-facing windows are also advantageous for daylighting. They admit relatively even, natural light, producing little glare and almost no unwanted summer heat gain.

Although east- and west-facing windows provide good daylight penetration in the morning and evening, respectively, they should be limited. They may cause glare, admit a lot of heat during the summer when it is usually not wanted, and contribute little to solar heating during the winter.

Speak with a Feng Shui Tints Representative today about how to best fit your home to take advantage of natural light and daylighting.

The Feds New Energy Bill Looks Out For Solar Power

September 29, 2008

Here at Feng Shui Tints, we love the sun! (Even if we do believe in protecting ourselves from it.) Hence, we encourage all homeowners to not just apply a wonderful window film to your house, but also to consider making your entire home energy-efficient and eco-friendly. Here is important news that the U.S. government is doing to promote energy independence.

Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) — The Senate passed a $17 billion energy tax measure that gives an unprecedented boost to the solar-power industry and extends tax credits for wind as well as for refineries that process heavy oil.

The energy measure, passed by a 93-2 vote margin, is part of a tax bill pegged at more than $100 billion. The energy portion of the bill failed eight times in the Senate and has faced opposition in the House because portions of the legislation haven’t been paid for with offsetting revenue.

“It is the most significant legislation ever introduced in Congress for solar,” said Rhone Resch, president of the Solar Energy Industries Association. “It will provide a stable market for businesses to grow over the next 10 years.”

First Solar Inc., Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd., SunPower Corp. and other companies would create 441,000 permanent jobs and inject $232 billion in new spending into the economy by 2016 because of the tax credits, according to a study commissioned by Resch’s group.
